Clinical Observation on the Bladder Tumor

Abstract
Since the Department of Urology was established in this Chonnam National University Hospital from March of 1967 up to March 1970, 31 cases of bladder tumors were observed, while before that period 4 cases could be found in the file of both out and inpatient records.
Among these 35 cases, 30 were hospitalized, while in other 5 cases diagnosis was confirmed by cystoscopy and biopsy at the out patient clinic. Clinical observation on those 35 cases of bladder tumors gave the following results.

1. Among the 35 cases, 30 cases were male and 5 cases female with ratio of 6:1.

2. Age range was from 14 months to 80 years old and peak incidence was between 40 and 79 years of age, consisting 79.9% of total.

3. Most frequent initial disturbance was hematuria, which occurred in 25 cases, while the other common manifestations were dysuria, frequency and urinary retention in order.

4. Interval elapsed from initial symptoms to visit was within one year in 24 cases (68. 8%)

5. Site of involvement in the bladder was 37. 1% in the lateral wall, 22. 9% in the posterior wall, 20. 0% it the trigone and 17. 1% in the entire wall.

6. Of 35 cases, surgery was performed in 19 cases electrocoagulation through suprapubic cystomy in 10, partial resection of the bladder and total cystectomy in 3 respectively, T.U.R. in 2 and cutaneous ureterostomy in one.

7. Pathologic diagnosis was: transitional cell carcinoma in 30, squamous cell carcinoma in 2, metastatic carcinoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and adenocarcinoma in one case respectively.

8. Follow-up studies were possible in 7 of 19 cases one or more times for 3 months to 3 years. At the first follow-up study 3 were free of tumor and 4 exhibited recurrence.
